Estrogen - Angel and Demon!
Most think of estrogen as the female hormone, but in fact it is not one hormone, but a class of hormones. There are actually three major estrogenic hormones in a normal woman's body. They are:Each type is important enough to merit its own page, but on this page I'd like to explore their overall effects on our bodies, and the importance of a natural balance between them. You may be wondering about the title...angel and demon? Isn't that a little melodramatic? Not really, when you understand their importance to a woman's well being. As the authors of What Your Doctor May NOT Tell You About Premenopause have said, "An excess or a deficiency of estrogens can make a world of difference in a woman's outlook on life and in her overall health and well being." They then go on to spend an entire chapter discussing their importance in our bodies, and why we should be sure to balance the major kinds naturally. So let's begin by considering...
Their Angelic Side
Their rise at puberty causes:- the maturing of a woman's sexual organs
- their continued health
- growth of breasts
- growth of pubic hair
- the beginning of monthly menstrual cycles
- the maintenance of pregnancy when it occurs
Their ongoing role in the body is to... - regulate the growth and function of the uterus
- prepare for pregnancy by building up a blood rich uterine lining
They also have an effect on...- in part, egg maturation in the ovaries
- the cervix
- the fallopian tubes
- the vagina
- the external genitalia
- the breasts
- the whole body by stimulating cell growth
- the healing of wounds by stimulating cell growth
- bone growth by stopping the growth of long bones in arms and legs
However, an excess of estrogens brings out...
Their Demonic Side.
Estrogen Dominance...- can result in a lack of zinc, magnesium and the B vitamins
- can contribute to heart problems since magnesium helps prevent heart attacks
- promotes cancer growth by stimulating cell growth.
- speeds up aging
- causes allergy symptoms
- is implicated in autoimmune diseases such as thyroiditis, Sjogren's disease, lupus, and erythematosis
- results in excess copper
at times can cause... - dry eyes
- breast cancer
- breast tenderness
- lower sex drive
- uterine cancer
- cervical dysplasia
- fat gain around waist, thighs, and hips
- hair loss
- premenopausal bone loss
- memory loss
- mood swings
- PMS
- thickening blood increasing risk for clots
- uterine fibroids
- gallbladder disease
- fibrocystic breasts
- infertility
- irritability
- Inability to sleep or disruption of normal sleep patterns
- osteoporosis
- cold hands and feet
- thyroid dysfunction
- water retention, bloating
- headaches
This list still isn't exhaustive, but I'm sure you get the idea that an excess of these hormones is not a good thing. There isn't one cause for this condition, unfortunately in fact, there are at least four major causes discussed by the authors of What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause (TM): The Breakthrough Book on Natural Hormone Balance . I've dealt with this topic in more detail on other pages. But, if you'd like to check out my sources, the book is available from Amazon by clicking on the preceding link, or you can get it from many public libraries.
Don't Believe Media Reports
The mainstream media often reports studies on conventional hormone replacement therapy by using the word estrogen. But, this is scientifically false, and misleading, since most modern day hormone replacement therapies also include synthetic progestins. The benefits and dangers of these prescriptions are usually not clearly understood, or reported, by the media. Careful research is necessary to understand their roles, their proper balance in the body, and how they can be balanced with other hormones to bring out their angelic characteristics instead of their demonic side.
True Signs of Deficiency
- hot flashes
- night sweats
- vaginal dryness
Deficiency can also cause: - tiredness
- memory loss
- confusion...
But, unfortunately, these symptoms can be caused by an excess as well. What I've come to understand is, the least dangerous of the three major types is Estriol. If you truly have a deficiency, it is the estrogen you need to supplement. You'll need a prescription to get it, so click on the preceding link for more information, and all the needed details about it.
Practical Answers
Usually the best start toward balance is to avoid xenoestrogens. These are usually synthetic hormones, or petrochemicals, that act like estrogens in the body. Although it is rarely possible to avoid them all, it is important to avoid as many as possible. The second key to finding balance is to supplement with a natural progesterone cream. Click on the preceding link for detailed information on where to find it, and how to use it. Unlike estriol, you don't need a prescription for it. These two steps will usually enable you to avoid the demonic difficulties caused by an excess of these hormones.
