Herbal Remedies for Menopause - Natural Relief for Menopause Symptoms
Herbal remedies for Menopause will enable you to overcome most, if not all, of your menopause symptoms... IF you find and use the right ones. Since I'm not a medical doctor, some may think I have no business writing about health supplements. However, although medicine is not my profession, due to the health challenges I've faced, finding health supplements that work has definitely become more than a hobby. I'm thankful I've been able to find information provided by many fine medical professionals, so I can recommend supplements that do work. Medical doctors rarely study herbs. They are too busy with patients and drugs to have time for them, but naturopathic doctors are those who specialize in herbs and other natural treatments, instead of drugs, whenever possible. Dr. Mark Stengler is a naturopathic doctor who has authored a book called The Natural Physician's Healing Therapies: Proven Medical Remedies That Medical Doctors Don't Know About . In it he recommends several herbs that have effectively controlled menopause symptoms in the women patients he treats.
Herbal Remedies for Hot Flashes
Black Cohosh...
is The first herb he recommends. It also has several other names such as black snakeroot, black bugbane, or fairy candle. Its scientific name is Actaea racemosa. He shares the story of a patient who was having hot flashes every hour. After two weeks of using black Cohosh they had dropped to only three a day, and after six weeks she had stopped having them entirely. It also helped her with depression and insomnia, two other menopause symptoms she'd been struggling with. The recommended dosage is 80 milligrams in tablet form or 80 drops of tincture. If that doesn't resolve the hot flashes, you can double the dose to 160 milligrams daily until your symptoms improve, then after six months without symptoms, he says you should be able to reduce the dose to 80 milligrams again. Dr. Stengler says the only possible side effect would be upset stomach but that can be overcome by taking the herb with food. He believes Black Cohosh is safe to use long term, and he says that studies have shown it is safe to use even if you have a history of breast or uterine cancer. One study actually showed that Black Cohosh hindered cancer cells from growing and multiplying. Wikipedia, however, says there have been several side effects such as diarrhea, headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, sweating, low blood pressure, slow heartbeats, and weight problems reported in some literature. So, if you are unsure about it, it would be wise to consult with a medical professional before adding black cohosh to your supplement regimen. I have used this herb as one of my herbal remedies for menopause, personally, with no problems.
Burdock
is the second herb Dr. Stengler recommends. It helps detoxify the body generally, but it also has a "cooling effect" on body temperature.
So it helps the body balance its hormones naturally, by detoxifying the liver, and it also lowers the number of hot flashes due to its cooling effect on body temperature. The way the Burdock seeds attach themselves to animals was the inspiration for the invention of Velcro. I found this tidbit of information fascinating, so I wanted to share it with you.
Dandelion
is the third herb Dr. Stengler recommends. I won't include a picture because I think most everyone recognizes a dandelion when they see one,but most of us would never imagine they might be among the herbal remedies for menopause. It contains two hormone-balancing nutrients. Since hot flashes are caused by hormonal imbalances, Dandelion helps to control them by better balancing your hormones. It is usually taken in capsule form. He recommends following the dosing instructions on the bottle since concentrations vary. He cautions that you shouldn't use it if you have diarrhea, or if you are allergic to dandelions. If the leaves cause a rash when they touch your skin, then you have an allergy to dandelions and shouldn't use the herb. However, the Germans even consider it safe to use during pregnancy and breast feeding, so its safety record is impressive.
Vitex
The final herb recommended for hot flashes among the herbal remedies for menopause is Vitex, also known as chaste berry, or chaste tree. Dr Stengler says this herb enables women to ovulate, thereby improving their estrogen - progesterone ratio and balancing their hormones. Due to its hormone balancing abilities, it is also helpful in preventing hot flashes during menopause. He usually recommends it in a multiple herbal formula that also contains black cohosh. The dosage should be from 80 to 240 milligrams, it should have thirty to forty milligrams of the dried fruit, and it should be used on a daily basis. It is a safe herb, but it shouldn't be used with birth-control pills or any drugs that impede dopamine receptors, like Haloperidol.
Availability
These herbal remedies for menopause are widely available in health food stores, and possibly in retail outlets as well. If you would like to get them online, they are available through Vitamin World...
or through Life Extension Foundation...
I have found both to be reputable suppliers. Vitamin World is the more economical of the two, but with Life Extension you'll always know you are getting top quality.
Conclusion
These are the most effective herbal remedies for hot flashes. There are other herbal remedies for menopause that I may add to this information in the future, but these should enable you to resolve the problem of hot flashes, if using natural hormones is not an option for you. If you've not had a chance to learn about how natural hormones can help with hot flashes, please visit the menopause hot flashes page for more information about how they can resolve this menopause symptom. Although it is difficult to deal with menopause symptoms, these herbal remedies for menopause should enable you to do so effectively.
