Melatonin is a Powerful Antioxidant and Sleep Aid
Melatonin is a natural hormone secreted by the pineal gland that helps to regulate our sleep patterns. It is also a powerful antioxidant. Russel Reiter, a cellular biologist at the University of Texas Health Science center and author of Melatonin: Your Body's Natural Wonder Drug. considers it one of the most powerful. Our natural levels peak by the age of three and remain high until sometime after middle age.It is unique in the way it functions as an antioxidant. It is able to pass from the blood into the brain, which enables it to fight free-radical damage in the brain. Animal studies have shown it may have protective effects on our DNA and our hearts. It is also different from other antioxidants in its range of usefulness. It has been studied for the treatment of many different health conditions including cancer, immune disorders, Alzheimer's, age related mental decline and different types of insomnia. There is controversy as to whether hormones should be available as dietary supplements due to their powerful effects on our bodies. Some countries only make them available by prescription. However, my research has not revealed any problems with short or long term usage. I had read that it might stop your bodies natural production, but Wikipedia says this is not so. If you are uneasy about these questions be sure to discuss them with your doctor before adding it to your supplements.
Usage and Natural Conservation Tips:
One of the most practical uses for melatonin is to enable improved sleep patterns as you grow older. When used for this purpose, generally most doctors agree that as low a dosage as is effective should be used. You can start with .5 milligrams and up the dosage, until healthy sleep patterns are achieved. If you want to take it to slow age related mental decline, a higher dosage would probably be necessary. Some studies show it can be used effectively for this purpose. Also be aware that to ensure your body produces the maximum possible amount of this hormone naturally, don't turn on lights when you get up during the night, unless it is an emergency. Research has found that only a few minutes of low level light during the night can cut production by fifty percent.
Available Doses and Further Advice
Melatonin supplements can be found in .5 milligram to 3 milligram doses. Dr. Reiter says the synthetic versions work as well as the natural ones, and they may be safer. If you decide to take it, always do so in the evening shortly before bed since it will make you sleepy. Be sure you don't drive or do anything else that requires alertness after taking it. Also, check with your doctor to be sure it won't interact with any prescriptions you may be taking.
Personal Experience
Both my husband and I have taken a time release 3 milligram tablet for several years now. We have seen definite improvement in our sleep patterns as a result. It was also recommended to me as an anti aging supplement that might help prevent a recurrence of cancer.
