Menopause Hot Flashes - Difficult, but not Dangerous
Menopause hot flashes aren't dangerous. Everyone agrees about that. But that's small comfort when you have to deal with them on a daily basis! For some women they happen almost hourly, and they may actually begin years before menopause. For many, they are one of the early menopause symptoms that make life most difficult during the premenopause and perimenopause stages of life. You're sitting quietly, relaxing after a busy day, when all of the sudden you're burning up! Sweat pops out all over your body, your face turns red, and you feel like you may smother. You say to your husband, "Are you warm?" He says, "No, I'm fine." You know it's a hot flash, and you feel helpless. In my case, five minutes later I'd be so cold I was almost shivering. I learned to layer my clothes so I could take layers off when I got hot, and put them back on when I got cold. Every woman's experience with hot flashes is different, but I've never known a woman who enjoyed them. Some doctors estimate that 75% of American women experience them to some degree or another.
Conventional Answer for Menopause Hot Flashes - Hormone Replacement Therapy
Doctors tell us they are caused by hormone fluctuations as we near the end of our reproductive years, specifically by low estrogen levels. And, unfortunately, you don't have to be menopausal to struggle with hot flashes. Many women who are in premenopause, or perimenopause have as many problems with hot flashes as do those who are in menopause. Additionally, although for some women hot flashes only last a few months, for others they drag on for years. Nevertheless the only solution most doctors offer when menopause hot flashes become unbearable is "hormone replacement therapy". Since conventional hormone replacement therapy has been shown to cause an increase in heart attacks, cancer, and strokes among women who use it, that doesn't seem like a very good solution.
Practical Alternatives
Since I'm not a doctor, I realize I'm not an expert in this field, so I'd like to point you to some who are experts. Both John Lee and Jesse Hanley are medical doctors. Dr. Lee had a private medical practice for over thirty years before retiring, and Dr. Hanley is a specialist in women's health and currently the medical director of Malibu Health Center and Malibu Health and Rehabilitation. Dr. Lee has written two books, and Dr. Hanley co-authored the second of the two. They are entitled What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause (TM): The Breakthrough Book on Natural Hormone Balance and What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About(TM): Premenopause: Balance Your Hormones and Your Life from Thirty to Fifty (What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About...) In both books they explain in detail why there is an easier and safer way to balance your hormones, and thereby eliminate hot flashes, than taking conventional hormone therapy. Their solution is to balance your hormones by using a
natural progesterone cream.
If you want a clear understanding of all the reasons they make this recommendation, I would highly recommend you get these books and read them. They are usually available from public libraries, or you can get them from Amazon by clicking on the links above for a very reasonable price. If using estrogen doesn't resolve your hot flashes they say that using bio-identical estriol, should do the trick.
Estriol
is the safest of the natural estrogens produced by our bodies, and apparently has protective effects against breast cancer as well. I use a natural progesterone cream and have found it very helpful in reversing the symptoms of estrogen dominance (including hot flashes) that I was struggling with since chemotherapy caused an early menopause for me.

However, if you are unwilling to supplement any hormone, whether natural or not, please check out the link above for an arginine supplement that has stopped hot flashes for some women, and read the page on herbal remedies for Menopause, where I share several herbs that usually eliminate hot flashes.Although menopause hot flashes are difficult, they can be overcome through practical and natural remedies. If they are truly disrupting your life, a natural progesterone cream will probably provide the quickest solution, but if you can't, or won't use hormones, there are herbal remedies that should work as well, although they usually take a little longer. I trust you have the information you need now to get rid of the difficulties caused by menopause hot flashes. If you find they are disrupting your life, don't give up until you find the solution that works for you.
