N-Acetyl Cysteine
Boosts Health Exponentially

If you've never heard of N-Acetyl Cysteine, I'm not surprised. But when you discover how many ways it can protect and improve your health, I suspect you'll want to seriously consider adding it to your daily intake of health supplements.

I stumbled on it while researching ways to help my husband, who was just recovering from his first case of pneumonia at the time.

He had been a very sick man for the last week and a half, so I'd started looking for something that might strengthen his respiratory system.

In browsing through Life Extension's Collectors Edition Magazine for 2011, I came across an article titled, The Overlooked Compound that Saves Lives, by Juius Goepp, MD.

Lo and behold, the article was all about this supplement, which I'd never noticed before.

N-Acetyl Cysteine
What it Is and How it Works

I quickly learned this supplement is made from the amino acid cysteine, and included in many drugs for colds and flu. However, due to this fact, most older people aren't aware of it, or of how it could improve their health.

Lately more research has been done on it, and as I read about how it works and what the benefits of supplementing are, as you grow older, I knew I should share my newly acquired knowledge with all of you.

When a person takes it orally, It works in two primary ways in the body:

  • It raises the level of glutathione, one of the body's most powerful natural antioxidants, in intracellular body spaces.
  • It stops inflammation by controlling the genes in the body's inflammatory pathways, so that stress or infectious agents in the body are unable to cause enough inflammation to do damage to the body.

I realize that is a little technical, but believe me, the article is even more so. If you are into medical language, you may want to access the article on the Life Extension website. Otherwise, I trust I'll share the most important findings here.

So why are these processes so beneficial to our health?

N-Acetyl Cysteine
Potent Liver Protector

Tylenol, or acetaminophen, as the drug is actually named, is widely included in many different over the counter and prescription drugs.

Since many people are unaware of how frequently it is found in different medications, accidental overdoses are the primary cause of liver failure in the United States.

If you overdose on acetaminophen, it uses up all of your body's stored glutathione. Without glutathione your liver is destroyed very quickly.

If you get emergency medical attention, and the doctors give you N-Acetyl Cysteine fast enough, it will restore enough glutathione to avoid permanent liver failure.

N-Acetyl Cysteine
Stops Inflamation

The more studies are done on different diseases, from flu to cancer, the more science is recognizing the connections between inflammation and many different diseases.

This compound has the ability to regulate many different genes, and the way they act, to stop inflammation in its tracks.

  1. It inhibits the molecule that starts the whole inflammatory chain called nuclear factor-kappa B so it doesn't start many other steps in the inflammatory process.
  2. By re-supplying glutathione levels in the body, it keeps free radicals from causing damage to the DNA that might result in cancer development, but would definitely rev up inflammation.
  3. It also stops the inflammation caused by excess weight.
  4. It avoids free radical damage and resulting inflammation caused by exercise.

All of these results, and the studies behind them, are footnoted and documented in the previously mentioned article.

N-Acetyl Cysteine
Protects Against Flu

N-acetyl-L-Cysteine, 600 mg 60 capsules
I'm sure you've heard of the possibility of a bird flu "pandemic" or epidemic. what makes bird flu so dangerous is that it causes a huge spike in your body's inflammation referred to in some places as a "cytokine storm".

Cytokines are molecules in our bodies that raise inflammation levels. when cytokines spike because of a viral flu infection, it inflames lung tissue to the point where it can be deadly for the elderly.

However this supplement has been shown to keep the virus from reproducing, while at the same time stopping the cytokines from causing massive inflammation.

But it doesn't only protect against bird flu, it provides the same type of protection against most common types of flu, or similar respiratory infections.

When it was combined with green tea extract, amino acids, and micro-nutrients, it was as powerful, and longer lasting than prescription flu drugs like Amantadine and Oseltamivir.

N-Acetyl Cysteine
Conclusions

Most of my information has been taken from the Life Extension article referenced above, so if you'd like more details, or want to check out the studies referred to, please read the article on the Life Extension site.

I had already ordered some of this for my husband before I wrote this page. I added it to his supplements as soon as we got it.

I'm sure it helped to improve his breathing and protect his lungs from further damage.

As you may have read in other places on the site, my husband's pneumonia diagnosis was later updated to a lung cancer diagnosis.

I've been very thankful I had added this supplement to his regimen before that diagnosis was made, since I have no doubt it has been helpful in enabling him to survive his cancer experience.

He has now been taking it for close to a year, and I believe it has helped him improve in spite of the loss of two thirds of his right lung to cancer surgery.

There are several other benefits this supplement can provide, but lest this page become a book, I've shared the others on the N Acetyl L Cysteine page, which is a synonymous term.

If you are facing challenges N-Acetyl Cysteine can help, don't wait to add it to your supplements.
