Pictures of Skin Disease
Specifically Autoimmune Skin Diseases

There aren't as many pictures of skin disease as I thought there would be, but I suspect there are two reasons for that.

First, most skin diseases are quite ugly, so it is embarrassing to have your picture taken while you have one. And second, most range from uncomfortable to excruciating, so when you are suffering from one, you aren't likely to think of snapping pictures of it.

I have taken a few pictures of my skin diseases, but I need to take more. I've also used some taken from Wikipedia on other pages, but those on this page are personal photos.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is seen as scaly red or reddish white patches like this, on a person's skin
Psoriasis, seen to the left, is considered a "chronic autoimmune disease" that is subdivided into five different types.

All are thought to be caused by the immune system mixing up signals to skin cells causing them to grow faster than they should. This causes the extra skin cells to accumulate in patches that may look silvery white, or red on a sufferer's body.

Conventional medicine says it is a chronic condition that may happen in only a few small patches, or may cover a persons whole body. Fingernails and toenails can be affected as can the joints. If the joints are also affected it is known as Psoriatic arthritis.

Why the immune system quits working correctly isn't known, although several theories have been suggested.

Atopic Dermatitis or Eczema

Atopic Dermatitis is apparently synonymous with Eczema. Both terms are used to refer to skin inflammation, or if you want to be more scientifically precise, inflammation of the outer skin layer called the epidermis.

Dermatitis is actually an allergic condition in most cases, but since allergies are caused by a hypersensitive immune system, it can be classified in either area.

This picture is of eczema, or atopic dermatitis under my right eye. It has become a chronic problem since I had chemotherapy several years ago.
It is characterized by itching, redness, and swelling of the skin. If scratched it will frequently break open, bleed, and enlarge the area affected. Many doctors think the tendency toward eczema is hereditary. And it is more frequently seen in families that have asthma as well.

As with Psoriasis, several different types are categorized, but there is no clear understanding of the cause, and no cure known at this time. In most cases it is a rather mild disease, but it can occasionally be very severe.

If a person has difficulty with it, they will see a doctor because the itching will drive them to do so, but conventional medicine only treats the symptoms, usually with some type of steroids, and in my experience the results aren't the greatest.

Atopic dermatitis has been one of my most difficult health challenges. Before I quit treating it with conventional medicine, I've taken three rounds of steroids before the rash and itching subsided.

The patch you see in the picture above, under my eye, at times resembles Psoriasis, and at other times Eczema.

Since shortly after I finished chemo, it has appeared to be a patch of psoriasis. But a few times a year it flares up into an active patch of eczema with swelling, itching, and pain. A few times I've thought it might go away, because it subsides to nothing but a red patch, but it never entirely does.

Conclusion

Autoimmune skin diseases are truly difficult to live with. Their causes aren't well understood, and conventional doctors prescribe drugs that do nothing to alleviate the underlying problem. They are designed to stop the symptoms, but over time they usually do less and less to accomplish that goal. Since these conditions are at least embarrassing, and at times incapacitating, better and more permanent solutions are needed.

If you suffer from these conditions, or have a loved one who does, the solution lies in finding ways to improve the immune systems function so your body stops attacking itself.

I won't say I've found that solution yet. As you can see by the pictures of skin disease on this page, I'm still struggling with these skin diseases, but I will say I believe the right supplements can enable your body to overcome these health challenges. I've begun to research this topic so I can discover which ones they are. As I do, I promise to share my discoveries with you.
