Pictures of Skin Diseases
Sometimes Needed for Recognition

Pictures of skin diseases frequently give us a better understanding, than hundreds of words of explanation.

But, not always. Many infectious and allergic skin diseases look very similar.

So rather than pictures alone, as you explore this page further, you'll find pictures of skin diseases along with explanations of their symptoms and causes. However, on this page we'll be focusing particularly on conditions for which modern medicine has yet to assign a clear cause...

Unfortunately there are more of these than anyone would like.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a disease that can cause embarrasement and emotional suffering for those affected. This picture was taken from Wikipedia. When I first read about this condition, I had no idea what it was, or if I had ever seen it before. But as soon as I saw a picture, I realized I had seen it before. Although the condition isn't life threatening, it can be extremely embarrassing for those who have it.

It is characterized by patches of skin that have no color, or a far lighter color than the person's normal skin tone. Of course, the darker the complexion, the more noticeable this disease is.

It happens when the skin cells (melanocytes) that produce the skin's color die, or are unable to work normally. But what causes this to happen is still a great mystery.

No one knows what causes it, but some research would suggest that a person may have genetic tendencies toward it. Additionally some suspect it may be caused by free radical damage, an unknown virus, or some malfunction of the nervous system.

For more details, and possible solutions, please visit Vitiligo Skin Disease to explore more, or to share your solution if you've already found one. Although not as noticeable on lighter complexions, it can still cause embarrasement. This is also taken from Wikipedia.

Although this disease only affects about 1% of people, for those it affects it can be very difficult to deal with. Probably the most well known person in recent history to struggle with this disease was Michael Jackson.

There are two major types of the disease known as non-segmental, and segmental vitiligo. The difference is that non-segmental isn't symmetrical in its appearance on the body while segmental tends to be more symmetrical. The non-segmental variety can appear at any age, but for some reason the segmental variety is more common during the teen years.

Each type can be further classified and explained, but that is beyond the scope of this page. We will leave it for a later specific exploration of this skin disease in particular.

Skin Tags

A skin tag is a harmless but unsightly condition. This illustration was taken from Wikipedia.

The scientific name for a skin tag is an acrochordon, or a fibroepithelial polyp. They are small harmless skin growths that usually happen where the skin bends or folds.

They frequently look like a tall mole, or like a mole that is about to fall off, since they are attached to the skin with a very thin stalk of flesh known as a "peduncle", according to Wikipedia.

Their cause is unknown, although some have theorized they are caused by skin irritation from clothes rubbing or irritating skin in the folds.

Since they are harmless growths the only reason for treating them would be if they became irritated and sore, or if they were in a place where you thought it was ugly enough you wanted it removed. If you want them removed, surgical removal is usually fairly easy and safe.

Moles

Moles are usually harmless, but must be watched since some can turn cancerous. This illustration was found on Wikipedia as well. A Mole is known scientifically as a "melanocytic nevus". Sometimes a person is born with them, but frequently they grow in the first two decades of a person's life.

They are considered to be abnormal tissue, and very occasionally they may turn into skin cancer. So it is a good idea to keep an eye on any moles you have on your body.

If you notice them changing at all, start taking pictures of them every six months. Compare your pictures to the characteristics of skin cancer (particularly melanoma) if you aren't sure the mole isn't changing to cancer, have it checked by a dermatologist.

Age Spots

Age Spots are not immediately dangerous, but may indicate nutritional deficiencies. My skin has quite a few, like the one pictured here since I had chemotherapy. Age Spots, also known as liver spots are discolorations that frequently appear on a person's skin as they age.

They look somewhat like a larger freckle, and it is suspected they are caused by growing older and over exposure to the sun.

Alternative explanations theorize they are caused by nutritional deficiencies or free radical damage.

Although they aren't at all dangerous, if they are caused by nutritional deficiencies or free radical damage, they might serve as an early warning system to enable us to avoid later health problems by wise supplementation.

Seborrheic Keratoses

A slide of a seborrheic Keratoses, taken from Wikipedia, can be a colorful study, as this example illustrates. Similar to age spots, these growths that resemble moles usually occur as people age. They range in size from very small to as much as an inch across. They may look like warts, but they aren't caused by a virus. What makes them dangerous is that they can be similar to a couple different types of cancer.

They usually look like they've been pasted on the skin, and they only affect the very top layers of it. They can vary in color from light to very dark brown, and they usually feel flat, or only slightly raised to the touch. You won't see any that look like the picture to the left, since it is a stained slide of one, rather than a picture.

There are actually eight different types, that have been described. If you see any changes in them at all, they should be checked out by a dermatologist to avoid any mistaken identities.

They are not dangerous and don't need to be treated, but as with moles, the danger would occur if they were to become cancerous, and be ignored since they aren't usually dangerous.
