Vitamins - Cornerstone for Youth and Health!
Everyone has heard of vitamins, but do you really understand what they are and how they work? There's a lot of talk about them, and we're told we need to take them as supplements, but frequently, no one bothers to explain why.
What are they anyway?
Webster's says that they are substances found in foods and essential to good health. Wikipedia says they are organic compounds required as a nutrient in tiny amounts by an organism. It further explains that a substance is only considered a vitamin if it can't be made in sufficient amounts by the organism and so has to be obtained from its diet. Hopefully this explains why I consider them a cornerstone for youth and health since they are essential to maintain health.
Where can we get them?
Theoretically you should get all you need from your food, but practically this frequently can't or won't happen. Most fruits and vegetables have some in them, but the amount they contain is not at all certain. It depends on the richness of the soil they are grown in, the weather conditions while they are growing, and the harvesting methods used.
Vitamin content is also affected by the length of time food is in storage before being eaten, and even by the methods used to prepare the food. For example soaking potatoes before cooking them will usually destroy most of their C content. They are classified by their biological and chemical activities, instead of by their structure. So all compounds performing the same activities are considered to be the same type. For example, retinal, retinol, and carotenoids are all forms of A. To further your understanding of why they are so essential to health, please explore the other pages already available on this site. The page on vitamin supplements
covers the antioxidants A, C, and E.
The anti-aging page explains:

How They've Benefited Me!
I've mentioned some of this information on other pages, but I thought it might help to put the health benefits I've noticed from using Vitamins together in one place. I've not been a user all my life, but I began to use them more regularly after my cancer treatments when I began to take responsibility for my own health.
So here's a short synopsis of what I take and why:
a multivitamin as a nutritional safety net. B complex - 100 milligrams each to deal with menopausal mood swings and other symptoms. I believe it has been a big help. In addition to the C in my multivitamin, I take C with Echinacea if I feel like I'm coming down with a cold or the flu. Frequently I'm able to avoid getting sick. I've recently added 1000 milligrams a day of D to my supplements. My research has indicated that most of us living outside the tropics are deficient in D at least during the winter months. I have noticed that I've been less bothered by the cloudy weather that seems to be a frequent feature of weather for about three out of the four seasons here in Indiana. I had come to the conclusion that I was beginning to suffer from SADD (Seasonal Affective Depressive Disorder). I read somewhere that this is truly a symptom of a D deficiency. So I decided to take it and see if it helped. It has.
I take E in my multivitamin formula and also in an antioxidant formula that I take in the evening. I haven't had a specific health challenge that I felt extra E would help.
Supplement Availability
Vitamins are widely available. You can pick them up at any drug store, WalMart, Sam's, and even many grocery stores.
My favorite places to buy them are from Life Extension Foundation, Vitamin World, or Vitacost. The quality will be the highest from Life Extension, but if you can't afford them, I have gotten benefits from those I bought from cheaper suppliers as well.
Conclusion
If you are in great health, eat mostly organic fruits and vegetables, like a wide variety of them, and get at least the five servings of fruits and vegetables a day as recommended, you may not need any more of these nutrients. However, if you're like most people that would not be a true description of your lifestyle. In that case, please consider the possibility that you might greatly improve your health and prolong your youth by supplementing your diet with high quality Vitamins.
