Original Question
Hello,
Thank you for your info. I have atrophic vaginitis (vaginal atrophy). Sex is beyond painful. I am 45. I recently stopped taking the pill after 15 years. I am currently on estrace cream. No luck so far.
Regarding your friend you mentioned on yourVaginal Atrophy page: Did the progesterone cream fix the atrophy so she could have non painful sex again?
I would prefer using this over the estrace at his point but I am not really sure what to do. I have tried stretching with my fingers, devices, estrace creme, wild yam supplements - nothing is working. I am desperate to fix this and resume a normal sex life. Thank you for all your info on your site.
Answer:
Hi Ms. C:
I can understand why you'd rather keep this question a little private, but I'm sure there are many others wondering the same thing.
I'm not familiar with estrace cream. What are the ingredients? I will try to look it up and find out more about it, if I can.
In answer to your question, yes I believe using the progesterone cream did fix the symptoms of vaginal atrophy for her, but I don't believe her greatest difficulty was in having sexual relations.
She just had problems with itching and burning all the time.
Nonetheless, I would definitely get a high quality progesterone cream and use it for a month or two. That should be enough time to see if it will resolve the problems you're having.
If it doesn't help in that time, I would try to find a doctor who will prescribe an estriol cream for you.
Estriol is the safest estrogen to use, and if progesterone doesn't resolve your symptoms, it will indicate that you do in fact have a problem with low estrogen.
If low estrogen is the problem, adding progesterone to your supplements won't fix it.
The doctors who are most open to prescribing natural hormones frequently advertise as using "bio-identical hormones". Also if you can find a naturalistic doctor, he or she might help too.
Unless you absolutely can't make time for it, I would highly recommend you read Dr. Lee's book,
What Your Doctor May NOT Tell You About Premenopause. With your background using the pill, there is a lot of information and helpful details in that book that you will find helpful. You can get it at Amazon by clicking on the link to the side, or you could probably find it in any big local bookstore.
I hope this is of help to you. Please get in touch again when things get better and let me know what helped, so I can share with others. Also, if you have further questions, just let me know and I'll do my best to help.
To Your Improving Health
