Cranberries

by Andriette
(South Africa)

I have been drinking a half glass of cranberry juice every morning on a empty stomach to help relieve kidney problems. I've seen a bit of improvement. (nothing earth shuttering) Can you tell me more about cranberries? Would it be more effective if I take it in table-form?

Answer: Hi Andriette,

Thanks for the question. I'm sure others are wondering as well. I'm doing some research on the matter now. I could tell you more about cranberries right now, but your second question is the one that needs more research. When I finish, I will further clarify with a comment. So check the comments that come in during the next week or so.

Cranberries are considered a super fruit due to their high vitamin C level and their high anti-oxidant levels. They also have a good deal of fiber.

Of course all of these nutritional properties would be somewhat concentrated in the juice except for the fiber.

I have a further question for you though that will help me determine the best answer to your question.

Are you taking 100% juice, or are you using a cranberry juice cocktail?

Thanks for the question, and I'll be back in touch shortly with a more complete answer.

Until I hear otherwise I will base my answers on the supposition that you are using 100% Cranberry Juice.

Cranberry Juice or Cranberry Extract Supplements?
by: Sherilyn

In answer to you second question, whether it would be better to continue using the juice or take it in "table form", I will assume that by "table form" you meant an extract supplement.

If you meant whole fruit, that would undoubtedly be the most beneficial for your health, but few find cranberries a tasty treat without the addition of lots of sugar.

If you eat them with a good deal of sugar, the extra sugar in your diet might undermine their health benefits.

From what I understand, to get the greatest benefits from cranberry juice, you need to drink at least 2 sixteen ounce glasses of unsweetened juice a day.

Since you are only drinking a half a glass, it sounds like you aren't drinking enough to get the full benefits.

If you don't like the taste and are having to choke it down, drinking more may not be practical for you at all.

In this case, if you can't or won't drink enough juice to get the full health benefits, ordering a good cranberry juice extract supplement should provide the same health benefits.

You can get one from Life Extension Foundation
It is a 500mg. capsule called Cran-Max Cranberry Extract. They are sold in bottles of 60.

You would probably need to take two capsules a day to get the maximum benefits.

I hope this fully answers your question. If I can be of further help, just enter another comment, and I'll get back with you again. I'm sorry it has taken so long to answer, but I was traveling without internet access when you posted the question originally.

More Information about Cranberries!
by: Sherilyn

Cranberry is a fruit most have eaten around Thanksgiving in the United States and Canada, but few realize its health potential.

It is considered a super fruit because a serving, 1/3 cup, has only about 46 calories and 4 grams of sugar, but it has 5 grams of fiber, and an appreciable amount of 4 important minerals, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium, with very little manganese and sodium.

It is also a good source of vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin K. Additionally, cranberries provide three different types of flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, flavonols, and anthocyanins.

Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants that have far reaching health benefits which continue to be researched. They are already known to prevent a wide range of health problems and promote general health and well being.

Not only do Cranberries help with kidney problems, they have also been proven to prevent urinary tract infections. In addition, studies have shown they will help prevent peptic ulcers, heart disease, and cancer. They also improve oral hygiene and health by impeding the formation of plaque.
