Dimethylaminoethanol Provides Major Health Benefits
It is Easily Utilized by the Brain for Better Memory
Dimethylaminoethanol, or DMAE as it is more frequently referred to,is a naturally occurring precursor of choline. It is more easily used by the brain than choline itself. It is found in cold water fish such as sardines and anchovies. In the brain it revs up the production of acetylcholine. You're probably thinking, "so who needs choline?" We all do. One nutritionist,Patrick Holford, has called it "The foundation of Memory." It is the essential ingredient in actelycholine, which is the major chemical the brain needs for memory. Choline is also found in cold water fish, but it isn't as readily available to the brain as DMAE is. So assuring your body's supply of dimethylaminoethanol will maintain a sharp memory if you have one, or enable you to recover, if your memory has been recently slipping. If you aren't a fish lover, or simply don't eat it frequently, supplementing your supply of DMAE will help protect your brain health.
Benefits of DMAE Discovered from Research:
Increases concentration Known as a "nootropic", which means it improves a person's ability to think. Increases brain power Boosts energy levels Helps raise metabolism Builds muscle Improves muscle tone Decreases Wrinkles Is a powerful anti-inflammatory
There are two forms of DMAE readily available through stores or mail order catalogs. The pill forms of the supplements are most useful for supporting brain health. Nutritionist Holford recommends you take 100 to 300 mg. per day. He cautions that it should be taken before noon since it can sometimes cause insomnia if taken later in the day.
A second type of DMAE is a skin cream that is used topically to delay or reverse wrinkles and other signs of aging.
Although the skin creams tend to be rather pricey, they are undoubtedly much cheaper than a face lift, or other surgical remedies for signs of aging.
Conflict over Usefulness
There seems to be some conflict over the usefulness of supplementing dimethylaminoethanol. Wikipedia states that it is not recommended, but I have two different resources in my library that do recommend it. One is written by a nutritionist, and the other by a doctor. Both sources state that other than the possibility of insomnia if you take it too late in the day, there are no cautions about taking DMAE as a supplement. If I were to begin experiencing troubling memory difficulties, I would definitely give DMAE a try to see if it helped. But, if you aren't ready to supplement, eating a lot more cold water fish might achieve many of the same benefits.
