Lubricate and Protect Joints and Brain with Omega 3 Fish Oil!

Omega 3 fish oils provide omega 3 fatty acids that are easily used by our bodies.

Although omega 3 fatty acids are available from plant foods, research shows our bodies may absorb less than 20% of available fatty acids from plants. So the best way for us to get them is from fish oils.

The American Heart Association recommends that we get at least 1000 milligrams a day, but many doctors think that twice that much would result in better health. If you are having problems with depression or other mental problems you might actually need as much as 4000 milligrams, or more, a day to experience improvements.

If you eat cold water fish, such as salmon, tuna, or sardines, three to five times a week, you may not need to supplement with fish oil, but if you don't like fish, or only eat it occasionally, you should definitely add a fish oil supplement to your diet.

Cautions

Dr. Sinatra's OmegaQ PlusIf you are on blood thinning medicines be sure to check with your doctor before starting to take fish oil. If you have a tendency to bleed easily or have a bleeding disorder the same caution applies.

Be sure to choose omega 3 fish oil supplements carefully to avoid heavy metal contamination and rancidity.

Check to be sure your supplement contains at least 18% EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and 12% DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). This information should be clearly stated on the label. If you can find a newer concentrated oil, or an oil blend that contains EPA, DHA, and GLA (gamma linoleic acid) it would be even better.

If the formula doesn't include Vitamin E, Dr. Stengler, the author of The Natural Physician's Healing Therapies recommends that you take this vitamin with the fish oil, and then store it in the refrigerator to protect against rancidity.

Fish oil should never be left in bright light or kept in a warm room, also to avoid it turning rancid.

Possible side effects

You might burp the taste of fish oil, or have "fishy breath". These problems can usually be avoided by taking the fish oil with meals.

To avoid taking rancid omega 3 fish oil pills you can cut off the end of a capsule and be sure it doesn't have a strong odor. If it does, it is rancid and you should buy another bottle. Be sure to return the other for a refund.

When you buy, check the label to be sure it was tested for contaminants such as mercury, and also to be sure that it is still fresh.

Reliable Sources

Life Extension Foundation puts out a product called "Super Omega-3 EPA/DHA" that has a highly purified, stable, and easily tolerated omega 3 fish oil along with other healthy fatty acids.

I've also purchased a supplement from Dr. Sinatra called Omega Q Plus that combines omega-3 fish oil along with Co-enzyme Q 10 and other heart healthy nutrients.

I'm sure there are many other sources of healthy omega-3 fish oils, but these are two I've had enough personal experience with to recommend.

Conclusions

Although you need to be careful to get a good supplement, using omega-3 fish oil is the best way to be sure you are getting enough omega-3 fatty acids to be healthy. Good supplements are available, so unless you eat fish three to five times a week, consider adding one to your diet.
